Establishing 2 Rope pumps in two villages and 2 Rope Pumps in two Govt. Primary Schools. These 4 Rope pumps have been grouped separetly as the water from the aquifer was saline and we are planning to install recharge tubes.
Narrative
In both the Schools, the location to install borehole was identified in consultation with the Community. In the initial days, the water was quite normal and later the water has become saline. The children are using the water only for washing their hands, plates, etc., It is planned to install recharge tubes in these two schools
Similarly, in the Kollukadu village, the Community members identified the location for installing the rope pump as there was a defunct hand pump in the near by location. This location is very close by to the backwater area. This pump has to be shifted to some other location.
In Pudupattinam village - another coastal village also we experienced saline water. Here it is planned to install recharge tubes.
Other Issues
Unusual and unexpected issues faced during project execution
In the Pudupattinam village, the cooperation of the community was limited. Twice, the bore pipes had to be replaced (because of theft) and a separate lock system was provided to safe guard the pump.
Learnings
Knowledge of project and process for sharing
Awareness meetings, planning meeting were conducted in these two villages about the project and they were involved in identifying the location and also during the installation process. But, since this rope pump benefits only to a limited people in the adjoining area, ownership of the pump has created problems.
