This project involves constructing 10 VIP latrines, drilling one borehole for drinking water at Chilukwa Primary School and constructing four latrines, 1 placenta pit and a bathing area for patients at the Engucwini Health Center in Malawi.

Narrative

In the original proposal it was mentioned that 5 VIP latrines will be constructed at the clinic, but during implementation, it was discovered that there was a need for a placenta pit at the maternity wing, so one placenta pit replaced the fifth latrine.

Sustainability

Creating and measuring long-term impact

The school committee gets a collects 50 cents/pupil/school term from the parents for management of the school a part from the government subversion.

Other Issues

Unusual and unexpected issues faced during project execution

This proposal addresses the dire needs of the Chilukwa school and will drill one borehole (drilled well) for drinking water. The well will be fitted with an Afridev pump where replacement and spare parts are easily obtained. In addition, WFP will assist with the construction of 10 Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines. Each latrine will be 3-meters deep and protected by a sturdy structure. Five latrines will be built for boys and five latrines for girls. It is well documented that many female students drop out of schools once they reach puberty. It is impossible for girl children to maintain hygienic standards while using the fields as a toilet and this situation forces them out of school. By constructing safe and private toilet areas, it is hoped that female student enrollment will increase rather than drop.

This proposal includes the construction of four VIP latrines, 1 placenta pit and two urinals and a shower block at the Engucwini Health Center.

Learnings

Knowledge of project and process for sharing

Chilukwa Primary School is a junior school (it has only classes 1 to 5) but the construction of VIP latrines at the school has elevated the status of the school as it has attracted more pupils especially the girl child. Now the chiefs and other development workers are looking at improving the school blocks to match with latrines. Government is also thinking of turning it into a full primary school. From the foregoing, we have learnt that sanitation can bring in other developments.

Impact

People Getting Safe Drinking Water: 400

School Children Getting Water: 400

People Getting Sanitation: 400

The Chilukwa school offers 400 children sanitation and the construction of sanitation facilities at Engucwini Health Center further increases this number.

People Getting Other Benefits: 60120

The clinic serves approximately 167 people per day or 60,120 people annually. There are approximately 46 maternity patients per week or 2,196 annually.

Maintenance/Operating Costs Annual, in US$: $400
