The water was very turbid and not used for drinking. It needed a filter, which was addressed by Project Well field workers. Interviewed Sabina Yasmin who said that she had been using this well for 4 months since the old tube well in the house tested positive for arsenic and was causing gastric problems.

The height of water column is 19 ft. Very fine sediment is visible in the water hence people are not using the water. Awareness meeting is needed to explain why there is fine sediment in the water and from our experience in many cases the water becomes clear as the dugwell gets old and now at the initial stage use of mawtka filter is a must.

Other Issues

Unusual and unexpected issues faced during project execution

The waters still turbid as of November report. Need to given special attention to this source.

The construction is just completed. The tin cover is attached and the arsenic test and application of the disinfectant are due. The community will be trained to apply the disinfectant and field workers will visit the bore-dugwell for two years or until the user community feels confident to take the responsibility of the bore-dugwell.

Implementer: Project Well and Aqua Welfare Society

Aqua Welfare Society, AWS, is the partner NGO of Project Well. Their office is based in the North 24 Parganas. The 7 honorary board members are located in Kolkata. There were only 5 field workers who were interacting with the villagers and beneficiaries, training the users on maintenance of the dugwells, organizing village meetings and health meetings. This year four more field workers including a management trainee have been contracted due to expansion of the program to other districts like Nadia and Murshidabad. A technical advisor of AWS is based in Kolkata who visits the village occasionally and one awareness programmer who is in charge of awareness programs in the communities and educational institutions. There is an accountant and also a data entry person on part time basis.
