Project Narrative

The rooftop rain water harvesting structures will improve access of potable water for the school children of Tabrghanak and Obborda schools, especially during the dry season.
The goals of the construction are:
-To provide safe drinking water for school children and other staff in areas where other sources of drinking water are unavailable or difficult to access.
-To link fresh water to sanitation to reduce the incidence of water borne diseases.
-To provide a community based and more long term solution to the problem of drinking water.

Currently, both schools have water problems and minimal sanitation.

In each above mentioned school, Norwegian Church Aid will construct one underground stone masonry retaining wall storage tank covered with reinforced cement concrete slab. The size of the tank will be (5 X 4 X 3.5) m with storage capacity of 50,000 liters. Roof water can be collect in the storage tank through PVC pipes and one hand pump will be installed in storage tank for safe operation purposes. It will be implemented by one of NCA Partners working in that region with the contribution of the community and 2 barefoot
water engineers trained in the Barefoot College, India, in the construction phase.

One phase

In the remote inaccessible villages where schools, health and community centres are located especially in hilly, drought prone, tribal, coastal and desert regions where community involvement and contribution would be instantly forthcoming rooftop rainwater harvesting fro drinking and sanitation is the only solution.

Local people are trained to construct RWH strucutres in local material. It is an alternative of local income generation source and provision of sweet drinking water and sanitation.

Project Financials

$23,000

Please refer to pages 4 and 5 of the Word doc attached under Additional Documents on the previous page of the application for the cost breakdown of this project.

The project sustainability depends on the degree and extent of the involvement of the community where the school is located. No RWH structure can be constructed without contribution from the community. This contribution has to be committed before the project begins in the village. Where RWH structures have been constructed in villages in India communities have contributed raw materials, voluntary labour, transportation of material with the result that nearly 20-25% of the total cost of RWH structure.

$23,000

Project Sustainability and Impact Assessment

RWH is a maintenance free system and constructed in local material at village level. It is only necessary to clean the structures before the rains begin.
